DOT IS ESCAPING!
A lot has gone into this project over the last week. Taking us even closer to the eventual release of the prototype to the public. As I promised in the previous post, I’ll be detailing most of the new features that will be present (in some capacity) in the prototype releasing February 1st.
Let’s breakdown a simplified overview of what’s been added and/or changed.
- A working saving & loading system with full file encryption.
Game settings & levels unlocked will be written to a local file & secured with a key which encrypts the file & prevents modifications.
- Main Menu
Fully featured & title music.
- Level Selection Menu
Ability to re-visit unlocked levels at anytime.
- Options Menu
Featuring screenshake toggle, music & sound effect volumes, gamepad toggle & ability to reset your save data/progress.
- Pause Menu
Added level selection, options menu and save game option for ease-of-use.
- Full controller support
Any Xinput device i.e. Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 etc.
- Fire effects
One that fits the games aesthetic & another that doesn’t (realism).
- Weather effects
Right now rain and also optional lightning. (Preview in main menu)
- Day & Night cycle
We’ll be using this in the full game. (Preview in main menu)
- 20 Levels
(4 worlds with 5 levels per-world) Will all be playable in the prototype!
- Lighting System
Such as lamps, torches, light flickering, colored lighting etc.
- Lens Flare
For some cool effects including glowing eyes, J.J. Abrams style 😛
- Wall jumping, dashing & double jump
Just classic platformer mechanics at this point. No surprise here!
LOOK OUT FOR THE PROTOTYPE RELEASE ON FEBRYARY 1ST!
THE STORY IN THE PROTOTYPE
Unfortunately you will not get much of the actual story in the prototype. You’ll get a quick gist of the overall concept but nothing expansive. It’ll def. leave more questions-than-answers and, that’s OK. I don’t want to spoil or reveal the full story or its outcome(s) until a somewhat full release.
EPILEPSY TRIGGERING FEATURES
No joke, if you have a history with epilepsy/seizures I would skip out on the prototype being released on February 1st. As it will have many features (at least in the main menu) that could cause harm. Things such as the rain combined with lightning, glitch effects, lighting effects etc. We’re only doing this to see how the game will perform across various computer configurations.
WORKING WITH SPRITES
It’s no secret I’m terrible at art, IRL and digitally. However, I have begun attempts at creating game assets via a sprite editor. Hopefully I can create some cool stuff. This would be ideal versus hiring outside artists. I hate using placeholder assets but after all, the coding is the most important thing with this project at the moment. You have to have a good foundation for the rest of the house to fall into place and actually work with one another. Having an enjoyable trumps art or overall graphics quality in general.
